The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV), was originally formed in 1975 as the National Coalition to Ban Handguns (NCBH) "for the purposes of banning the importation, manufacture, sale, transfer, ownership and possession of handguns." In 1989, after expanding its efforts to include restrictions on all firearms, the group adopted its new name, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

The United Methodist Church was the principle founder of CSGV. CSGV's membership is comprised of individual supporters. Ex-CIA employee, Edward O. Welles, who also helped to form HCI, was an original NCBH board member and, reportedly, NCCH/HCI was an unreported member of the Coalition for several years.

Publication: Washington Report, quarterly.

PAC: National Handgun Control Voter Education Fund

Membership: 250,000 dues-paying members.

HCI claims 1,000,000+ members, but this includes contacts by interested parties by any means.

HCI originated (1974) as the National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH), a group which lobbied for government restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms through support for restrictions on the manufacture, importation, sale, transfer, and civilian possession of handguns. The organization voiced a desire for an eventual handgun ban through gradual steps, but changed its name and espoused goals due to results of a survey. In 1991, HCI amended its Articles of Incorporation to reflect its support of restrictions on rifles and shotguns as well.

CPHV is an HCI "educational" spin-off, which portrays firearms and their ownership as inherently dangerous.

The following sections give the claims of HCI, to be helping in the prevention of Gun Crimes, through CPHV [rf].

The Centers Research department provides ongoing analysis of the public health data that shapes these programs, as well as groundbreaking studies of crime data that demonstrate that gun laws work.

The Legal Action Project:

Since 1989, the Legal Action Project has made sure gun violence victims have their day in court. LAPs attorneys provide free legal representation for victims in lawsuits against reckless gun manufacturers, dealers and owners. The LAP now represents more than twenty cities and counties who are suing the gun industry to force them to make and distribute their products more responsibly, and is widely acknowledged as the most powerful legal adversary of the American gun industry.

The Law Enforcement Relations:

The Law Enforcement Relations Department works with law enforcement throughout the country, implementing programs to reduce gun violence in schools and communities. LER also develops strategies to interdict guns and reduce the number of illegal guns on the street. LER also works to pass federal and state legislation to reduce gun violence.

Straight Talk About Risks:

S.T.A.R., CPHVs politically-based Anti-Gun curriculum, targets schoolchildren, aged, pre-K through - 12th grade.

Steps to Prevent Firearm Injury:

Steps to Prevent Firearm Injury (STOP) is a firearm prevention-counseling program designed specifically for pediatricians and pediatric health care providers. This program is a joint project of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center, launched in 1994, and revised in 1996.

Steps To Prevent Firearm Injury In The Home:

Launched in June of 1998 by Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Donna Shalala, Steps To Prevent Firearm Injury In The Home (STOP 2) is a counseling tool designed for all health care providers from a wide range of disciplines (nurses, social workers, psychologists, health educators, counselors, etc.) who work with diverse populations.

The STOP 2 program prepares health care providers to talk with patients/clients and their families about the risks of a gun in the home as part of their routine injury prevention counseling.

Project Lifeline:

ProjectLifeline is a program of the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence and is co-sponsored by two national organizations of health professionals working to prevent gun violence: the Handgun Epidemic Lowering Plan (HELP) Network and Physicians for Social Responsibility.

(Million Mom March [MMM] is a national, grassroots, chapter-based, organization formed in 1999, as a reaction to the shooting at the Jewish Community Center, in suburban Los Angeles. Their stated goal, is to win passage of Gun Laws, including:

(1) Licensing of handgun owners, (2) Registration of handguns, (3) Creating consumer product safety standards for guns, (4) Closing the gun show loophole, and (5) Limiting gun purchases to no more than one a month.

They staged a march in Washington, D.C. On Mothers Day 2000, and have continued to build a national organization.

The Founder, Donna Dees-Thomases is a close friend, of Bill and Hillary, Clinton).

According to the New York Times, the Million Mom March organization has laid off 30, of it's 35-employees. Apparently they have been loosing public support and funding for some time now, and have had to severely reduce the number of their staff.

We were all fairly certain it would only be a matter of time before the public began to see through all the emotion and rhetoric of the Million Mom group, and see them for what they really are. Apparently that time has come.

The Violence Policy Center is the new name of the New Right Watch (NRW), a non-profit group that researched what it perceived as a new right-wing American political movement. NRW focused its attack on semi-automatic firearms with two releases: Assault Weapons and Accessories in America (1988), a joint effort with EFEHV, and Assault Weapons: Analysis, New Research, and Legislation (1989). Funding for New Right Watch was received from individual and foundation grants.

VPC is a non-profit national "educational" foundation that proposes firearms restrictions, including total handgun prohibition, as measures to reduce violence in America. VPC's Executive Director, Josh Sugarmann, formerly the Executive Director of the New Right Watch and, previously, with the National Coalition to Ban Handguns, authored a book attacking the NRA NRA: Money, Firepower, and Fear (1992). In 1997, VPC produced a report attacking NRA's Eddie Eagle program, calling it Joe Camel with feathers. This attack was so scurrilous that many in the media denounced it. It stands as clear evidence that VPC is more interested in attacking the NRA than in finding any rational or effective solutions to violence in America.

Religious Based Anti-Gun Organizations

While all the organizations listed in this section, are already listed elsewhere here.It may not be apparent, at first glance, just who, or how many of these, there are. Thus, while compiling this list.I happened to notice a pattern beginning to emerge, and decided to test my hypothesis. This is the list, which resulted from that test.See my additional personal observation, at the bottom.[rf].

In my opinion, it would appear, that the conservative, Religious Right, Republican, sector of the nations leadership. Is no more in favor of the 2nd Amendment, or an Individual Right to a Self-defense, than the, left leaning, socialistic, Democrats. Perhaps it is time, to start looking at, thinking about, and voting for the Libertarian Partys candidates.

I would also add some of the words of Jesus on this subject, as it seems they have been mis-represented by our religious leaders, for all too long now:

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I am come not to send peace, but a sword. - Jesus, in Matthew 10:34, the Holy Trinity Version, Catholic Bible (1951), and the King James Version.

But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise a wallet; and let him who hath no sword, let him sell his tunic and buy one. - Jesus, in Luke 22:36, the Holy Trinity Version, Catholic Bible (1951), and the King James Version. [rf].
